Utilities
The University of Alberta owns and operates one of the largest campus district energy systems in North America. This energy system is anchored by the university’s Heating and Cooling plants and supplies services to the university as well as the University of Alberta Hospital, the Stollery Childrens’ Hospital, the Cross Cancer Institute, the Jubilee Auditorium and other smaller entities.
Our skilled team of engineers, operators and trades people, provides our clients with power, steam, chilled water, compressed air, domestic water, demineralised water, storm and sanitary drainage services. We also manage all the necessary planning, engineering and construction activities related to utilities. In the summer of 2011, we will see the completion and opening of our latest projects, a new Cooling Plant on Campus. This new facility will provide us with additional capacity to service the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science; Edmonton Clinic Health Academy; and Edmonton Clinic South.
As a participant in Alberta’s deregulated energy market, Utilities is able to realize cost-savings, through the active management of our power production and natural gas purchases, which helps to reduce the operating costs of not only the university, but also each of our clients.
