Energy Management and Sustainable Operations
Energy Management and Sustainable Operations (EMSO) plays a leading role in the advancement of sustainability within Facilities and Operation and throughout the University as a whole. EMSO is responsible for overseeing the University’s multi-million dollar Energy Management Program, which implements energy efficiency and conservation measures across campus and is currently developing the University of Alberta’s first greenhouse gas inventory, which will allow the University to measure the climate impact of our operations and to design strategies for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to leading these two initiatives, our interdisciplinary team also works with other units within Facilities and Operations to encourage and support the incorporation of sustainability initiatives into their areas of responsibility. One recent example of these efforts includes EMSO’s collaboration with Buildings and Grounds Services to launch an organic turf maintenance pilot project on campus. Currently, EMSO is working to assist each unit in the creation of its own sustainability strategic action plan. These plans provide an important opportunity for each unit to demonstrate their own commitment to environmental leadership, and will ensure Facilities and Operations continues to systematically incorporate sustainability into all areas of its operations.
Our unit works to minimize the University of Alberta’s impact on the environment on behalf of all our students, staff, faculty and all members of the University community.
