Hazardous Materials Management

The Health and Safety of University of Alberta employees and students is our priority. All hazardous materials on University of Alberta property are managed by Facilities and Operations in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety through a Hazardous Material Management Program.

The purpose of this program is to reduce or eliminate the potential for exposure to hazardous materials by:

  • conducting hazardous material assessments and maintaining a computer-based inventory;
  • labelling materials containing asbestos within service areas;
  • conducting periodic site inspections;
  • removing hazardous materials;
  • training university employees who work with or around hazardous materials;
  • developing and maintaining site specific Safe Work Procedures;
  • educating the campus community; and
  • addressing any concerns related to hazardous materials.

In this section, the term Hazardous Materials refers to materials containing a toxic constituent (i.e. Asbestos) that are adhered to or contained within building mechanical, structural or architectural systems that may pose as a health hazard if disturbed.

Strict Provincial and Federal Legislation has been developed to safely and effectively manage and dispose of these hazardous materials. The University of Alberta has adopted this Legislation to all of our processes and Standard Safe Work Procedures when dealing with hazardous materials on campus.

The hazardous materials managed on campus include asbestos containing materials, lead in paints and glazes, Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS), Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), radioactive components and mercury within electrical and mechanical equipment.
